Covering diversity in San Diego

"Overlooking the Obvious: Covering San Diego's Diverse Communities. is the subject of a May 22 panel.

With thriving gay, Native American, African-American and Asian-American communities -- among many others, San Diego's diverse social landscape goes way beyond Caucasian and Latino.

SPJ presents a special panel on covering the diversity in our region, and the challenges and opportunities that exist in that coverage, in a program titled "Overlooking the Obvious: Covering San Diego's Diverse Communities." The program will take place Thursday, May 22, 2008.

Featured speakers include Rose Davis, editor of "Indian Voices"; Aida Bustos, editor of Spanish-language publication "Enlace"; Simeon (Sim) Silverio Jr., publisher & editor of "San Diego Asian Journal" and "Philippines Today"; and Joey Peña, editor of "The Gay and Lesbian Times." Denise Ward, director of media relations for USD and former president of the San Diego Association of Black Journalists, will moderate.

The event begins with refreshments at 6:30 p.m., followed by the program at 7 in the San Diego Union-Tribune first-floor auditorium, 350 Camino de la Reina.
