Merrie Monteagudo is the new library manager at the San Diego Union-Tribune, replacing Sharon Reeves, who retired in December. Monteagudo was formerly the library’s research manager and has worked at the U-T since 1988.

U-T staff photographer K. C. Alfred placed first in the features category in Canon’s 39th Annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Photo Contest. K.C.’s winning entry showed San Diego Charger’s coach Marty Schottenheimer being doused with water after his 200th career win.

Metro reporter Mark Sauer received the Media Award from the San Diego Psychiatric Society this summer. The winning front-page story focused on relationships seniors form playing poker at Viejas Indian Reservation.

The U-T was honored for Best High School Sports Section for the second straight year by the California Prep Sports Writers Association this summer.

Sports copy editor Eddie Ibardolasa completed this 3rd consecutive Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon this summer.

U-T librarian Jenna Zbig tied the knot in Las Vegas with her husband John, a game developer at Sony Online Entertainment.

Outdoors writer Ed Zieralski took first place in the Best Column category and earned a 2nd-place award in both Best News Report and Best Newspaper Feature from the Outdoor Writers Association of California. He also won first and third place awards for Best Radio Show for his weekly KCBQ show.

Five interns worked in the U-T’s newsroom this summer, including Jenna Colley, Brandon Meachum, Molly O’Hare, Daryl Peveto, and Yuxing Zheng.

Metro reporter Kelly Thornton and her husband, staff photographer Sean Haffey, celebrated the birth of their first child, Conor, on the Fourth of July.

Arts writer Jim Hebert and TV critic Karla Peterson each took 2nd place awards in the American Association of Sunday and Features Editors annual Excellence in Feature Writing Competition.

SignOnSanDiego’s David Brooks is the proud father of a new baby boy, Xavier.

Rocio Bernal left SignOnSanDiego after seven years for a career in Catalina Island real estate.

Robert Hopwood has joined SignOnSanDiego as community news content producer.

 

TV

NBC 7/39 news anchor Catherine Garcia and her husband Tad Berry welcomed Jackon Barry on June 14.

Mi San Diego anchor Tania Luviana and her husband David Castillo welcomed son David on May 2.

Maribel Roldan joined the 7/39 staff, also reporting and producing for Mi San Diego.

May Tjoa is the newest staff producer at 7/39 and is currently working on the 4:30 p.m. newscast. Before coming to 7/39, she worked as a community outreach officer for the Los Angeles District Attorney.

Photojournalist Jamie Joyce took first place in Spot News in the National Press Photographer Association’s quarterly clip competition. He was covering an Escondido fire.

Over at KUSI News, Kelly Ryan joined the news staff as anchor for the weekend newscasts at 6, 10 and 11 p.m. news, and reporter for weeknight broadcasts at the same broadcast times.

Steve Cohen returned to KUSI as news director, having previously served in that capacity from 2003 to 2006.
