San Diego pro chapter member Joe Guerin has been named editor of the Daily Transcript. Guerin, 51, has been managing editor for the past 6 years, and prior to that he was managing editor of the Chula Vista Star-News. A San Diego State grad, he started journalism with the San Diego Log in 1983. The Transcript celebrates its 120th anniversary this year.
Over at the San Diego Union-Tribune, the San Diego Association of Black Journalists honored special sections copy editor Jerry McCormick as its “Member of the Year” in April.
U-T staff writer Greg Moran attended the inaugural Journalist Law School at Loyola Law School in L.A. this summer under a fellowship.
The U-T’s Rich Scannell was promoted this summer to co-chief of the news copy desk, sharing duties with John Lydon. Copy editor Marianne Scully has joined the news desk. She previously worked at the Los Angeles Times.
Janet LaVelle is now the north coast editor in the Carlsbad office. Dan McSwain is now an editorial writer and member of the editorial board.
Tanya Mannes joined the U-T as staff writer covering Chula Vista. Matthew Rodriquez is covering Vista as staff writer.
Staff writer Ed Graney left the U-T to become the lead columnist for the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Former U-T staff writer Caitlin Rother spoke at the National Writers Workshop in Fullerton where she told about writing her first non-fiction book on the Kristin Rossum murder case.
Copy editor John Tammariello joined the copy desk this summer, coming from the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Several staff writers at the U-T changed assignments this summer: Dani Dodge is now covering downtown San Diego and Ron Powell will focus on the Charger’s search for a new stadium. Maureen Magee is covering the port district.
U-T staff writer Chris Moran is sporting a new Boston Marathon jacket, having run the race in 3:29:27.
Anne Krueger and Alexa Capeloto were featured on the Poynter Institute Web site as an example of a veteran reporter and a young editor working together effectively.
U-T sports designer Jason Brown resigned to return home to Texas and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Ellen Bevier at the U-T is now the deputy news editor, assisting Lora Cicalo. Laura Wingard stepped up to metro editor, sharing the helm with Lori Hearn.
U-T staff writers Nina Garin and Matt Hall welcomed their Fourth of July baby, Marina Eve.
University of San Diego adjunct journalism professor Ron Bonn has a new grandson, Calvin John, born to Dan and Carol Bonn of Redondo Beach. Another son, David Bonn, will wed Jennifer Jaikaran on Sept. 16th in Cape May, N.J.
Radio:
Andrew Phelps has joined the KPBS news team as a part-time reporter. Phelps has written for the North County Times and has his own blog, andrewphelps.com.
Reporter Ed Joyce is taking over the environmental beat at KPBS. His predecessor, Erik Anderson, is devoting most of his time to editing and anchoring the afternoon newscast.
KPBS news director Michael Marcotte was elected president of the Public Radio News Directors Assn. at its recent national convention in Los Angeles.
TV:
Over at KUSI-TV, veteran reporter Kristen Cusato has been hired as a general assignment reporter and fill-in anchor for “Inside San Diego.”
Online:
David Brooks and Christine Ingalls have joined SignOnSanDiego. Maya Kroth promotes the online service every Thursday morning on FM 94.9.
AnnaMaria Stephens, a senior content producer for SignOn, left to pursue a freelance career.
